    Hi,

Does anyone out there know why bolts and welds cannot be designed to share force in a connection? -Per AISC

    HI Jonathan,

I think its because AISC is accounting for the fact that the stiffer connection elements will take more load. welded joints have less deformation capacity that bolts joint and will tend to attract more load before the bolt does. The weld would therefore have to be able to support the load independently it would fail and then the connection would in effect become unzipped.
